Southern Accents
Introduction
The Southern Accents series was inspired by a trip to Florida and Georgia in late February and early March, 2005. The series is based on photographs taken by myself and Karissa Van Ostrand.
Hopefully this series gives the impression of the unique and diverse beauty of the deep south and captures some of the charm and elegance of Old Dixie. The paintings in this series can be divided up between the Florida paintings and the Savannah work. The paintings from Florida extend through the northeastern part of the state, from Lake Toho, near Kissimmee to St. Augustine and places in between. The Savannah experience is one all its own and the paintings from that old southern city were all taken from a whirlwind three hour walking tour of the historic district.
The inspiration for this series was Karissa, who spent a large amount of her childhood in the south, and spent part of elementary school living in the Kissimmee area. She suggested Florida as a good place for material. Many of the paintings in this series are either from her photographs or are a direct result of travelling to places she suggested that I ordinarily would not have gone, and I owe her a great debt of gratitude for her help.
